How Decimal Odds Work
Payout = Stake x Odds | Profit = Payout - Stake
| Odds | 1000 Bet | Profit | Probability |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.50 | 1,500 | 100 | 67% (favourite) |
| 2.00 | 2,000 | 1,000 | 50% (even) |
| 3.00 | 3,000 | 2,000 | 33% (underdog) |
| 5.00 | 5,000 | 4,000 | 20% (long shot) |
| 10.00 | 10,000 | 9,000 | 10% (extreme) |
Implied Probability
Implied Probability = (1 / Odds) x 100%
Odds of 2.50 imply 40% chance. If you believe the real chance is 50%, the bet has value.
The Bookmaker Margin
Fair market: probabilities sum to 100%. With margin: 104-108%. The excess is the bookmaker's profit. Lower margin = better value for bettors.
Value Betting
A value bet exists when odds are higher than true probability. Research the match, estimate probability, convert to fair odds, compare with market. Bet only when 5%+ edge exists. Read our tips guide for the complete methodology.
Odds FAQ
Higher odds = higher payout but lower probability. Value depends on whether odds exceed true probability.
New information (team news, weather) and betting volume move odds.
When odds across markets guarantee profit. Extremely rare and disappear quickly.
Converting Between Odds Formats
| Decimal | Fractional | American | Probability |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.25 | 1/4 | -400 | 80% |
| 1.50 | 1/2 | -200 | 67% |
| 2.00 | 1/1 | +100 | 50% |
| 3.00 | 2/1 | +200 | 33% |
| 5.00 | 4/1 | +400 | 20% |
| 10.00 | 9/1 | +900 | 10% |
Accumulator Odds Calculation
| Type | Example | Combined Odds | Win Probability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Double | 1.80 x 1.90 | 3.42 | ~29% |
| Treble | 1.80 x 1.90 x 2.00 | 6.84 | ~15% |
| 4-Fold | Four selections | ~11.63 | ~9% |
| 5-Fold | Five selections | ~21.60 | ~5% |
Accumulators are exciting but mathematically difficult. Single bets are more reliable for long-term profit.
Line Movement
Odds move based on: team news (10-25% shift for key absences), weather (dew forecasts shift match winner), betting volume (heavy one-sided action), and late money (sharp bettors in final minutes). Understanding line movement helps identify value before it disappears.
